Neurodiversity/Autism Spectrum Research

Our commitment to the needs of atypicals, those who identify as neurodiverse or those within the autism spectrum but also who might not be diagnosable to a particular spectrum category according to the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-V) by the American Psychiatric Association, is never ending.  The Center for Disease Control (CDC) estimates that 1 and 54 births or more than 3.5 million Americans live with an autism (neurodiverse) spectrum challenge. " For the first time, ADDM Network data found no overall difference in the number of black children identified with ASD compared to white children."(CDC, 2020, para 8).  But black and Hispanic children may not receive accommodations for Autism Spectrum Disorder as quickly as Caucasian counterparts.  Our research center is working to understand how to improve better socialization and learning outcomes for neurodiverse individuals. so they are the most productive on the job, in school, or with their families

Michigan Senator Michael MacDonald holds a doctorate in healthcare administration. He is the chief executive officer of Fifth Domain, a research organization dedicated to conducting and funding studies in several societal segments including mental health, aerospace, and economics. Dr. MacDonald recently presented at the 2020 Qualitative Report Conference at Nova Southeastern University. His session entitled, A qualitative study of women to assess coping mechanisms for exercise adherence to curtail obesity, was well received.

According to the abstract, "The study sample focused only on a successful deterrence of obesity in women recruited from a Detroit area YMCA. The results demonstrated that predominately negative external physiological and psychological experiences are initially necessary to self-determine or trigger behavioral change, followed by prolonged positive internal psychological motivators needed to maintain adherence to exercise, culminating with the consistency of routine structured regimen to deter obesity."
